A civil partner visa lets you live in the UK with a civil partner who is a British or Irish citizen or settled here. The requirements, length and route to settlement are the same as for a spouse visa; the points below are the ones specific to civil partnerships.
Recognition of your partnership
A civil partnership registered in the UK is recognised. A partnership or registered relationship formed abroad is recognised if it is listed in the Civil Partnership Act 2004 or meets the general conditions for recognition. Where the status of an overseas relationship is unclear, applying as an unmarried partner on two years' cohabitation can be safer; we advise which to use.
Requirements
- Both 18 or over, in a recognised civil partnership, intending to live together permanently in the UK.
- Financial requirement of £29,000 combined income or savings.
- English at CEFR A1 on the first application, A2 at extension, B1 at settlement.
- Adequate accommodation and no suitability bar.
Length and settlement
Two years and nine months, then an extension of two years and six months, then settlement as a partner after five years. If you came on a proposed civil partner visa, the five years run from the switch.
Fees
£2,064 from outside the UK, £1,407 from inside, plus the health surcharge of £1,035 a year. Correct on 13 October 2026. Our fixed fee is £1,500 for one applicant; we can arrange a fixed fee for additional applicants. See our fees.
What we do
We confirm your partnership is recognised, check the financial evidence against Appendix FM-SE, and run the application. If refused, we advise on appeal.
