Primus Solicitors is a national law firm. We act for clients across the UK from our Manchester office, by phone, video or in person. Employers must provide a safe place and system of work, proper training and equipment, and competent colleagues. When they do not and you are hurt, you can claim against their compulsory employers' liability insurance, and the law protects you from being dismissed or treated badly for claiming.

Accidents we deal with

  • Slips, trips and falls, including from height and on wet or uneven floors.
  • Manual handling and lifting injuries.
  • Machinery, tools and equipment that was faulty or unguarded.
  • Forklift, vehicle and warehouse accidents.
  • Injuries from a lack of training, protective equipment or risk assessment.
  • Assaults at work where the employer failed to protect you.
  • Industrial disease and repetitive strain, including hearing loss and dermatitis.
  • Agency, temporary and sponsored workers: the same duties apply, and we can advise on your immigration position where it is linked to the job.

What to do now

  1. Report the accident and make sure it is in the accident book.
  2. See a doctor and keep every appointment letter and receipt.
  3. Note witnesses, take photographs and keep any damaged equipment or clothing.
  4. Contact us. We obtain the records, deal with the insurer and arrange an independent medical report.

Funding and time limits

Most claims run on a no win no fee basis. Court proceedings must normally be started within three years of the accident or of the date you knew the injury was work-related.

Questions people ask

Will I lose my job?

Dismissing or penalising you for bringing a claim is unlawful. Claims are paid by the employer's insurer, not from its day-to-day money.

I was partly to blame. Can I still claim?

Often yes. Compensation can be reduced to reflect your share of the blame rather than refused.

I am self-employed or on a zero-hours contract.

Duties under health and safety law extend to many people who are not employees. Ask us; it depends on who controlled the work.
