You can extend your Student visa from inside the UK to continue studying, if the new course meets the academic progression rules and you are within the time limits on study. Apply before your current leave expires; an application made in time extends your leave until it is decided.
Academic progression
The new course must usually be at a higher level than the last, or at the same level where it is related to the previous course or to your career aspirations and the sponsor confirms that. Repeating a course or moving to a lower level is allowed only in limited circumstances.
Time limits
Study below degree level is limited to two years in total, and there is a cap on time at degree level and above for most students (with exceptions for PhDs and some professional courses). We calculate your position before you accept a place.
Requirements
- A new CAS from a licensed sponsor.
- Funds for the course fees and living costs for the period the rules require, held for 28 days.
- English at the level the new course requires.
- Compliance with the conditions of your current visa.
Alternatives
If you have a job offer at the required level, switching to the Skilled Worker route may be better than another course. After completing a degree, the Graduate route does not need a CAS.
What we do
We check progression and time limits, prepare the application and evidence, and advise on the better route where further study is not the right step.
Fees
Home Office fees and the immigration health surcharge change each April; we confirm the current figures when we advise you. Our fee is fixed and quoted before you instruct us; see our fees.
Ask a question
