The Youth Mobility Scheme lets young people from participating countries live and work in the UK for two years, or three for some nationalities, without a job offer or sponsor. It is a cultural exchange route, not a work route, but you can work and study while here.
Who qualifies
- A national of a participating country, or a British overseas citizen, British overseas territories citizen or British national (overseas).
- Aged 18 to 30, or 18 to 35 for nationals of countries whose agreement allows it.
- Savings of at least the amount the rules require, held for the required period.
- No dependent children.
- Not previously on the scheme (one grant only).
Some nationalities must enter a ballot and receive an invitation before they can apply; others can apply directly. The list of countries, age ranges and ballot requirements changes, so we check the position for your nationality.
What you can do
Work in most jobs, be self-employed within limits, and study. You cannot take professional sport roles or extend the visa.
After the scheme
The visa does not lead to settlement. Many people switch to a Skilled Worker, partner or other route before it ends; the switch must be made from inside the UK before the visa expires, and planning it early avoids a gap.
What we do
We confirm eligibility for your nationality, deal with the ballot where it applies, prepare the application and advise on switching to a longer-term route.
Fees
Home Office fees and the immigration health surcharge change each April; we confirm the current figures when we advise you. Our fee is fixed and quoted before you instruct us; see our fees.
Ask a question
Not sure which route applies? Ask a solicitor and we will reply by phone or email.
