Extending your leave from inside the UK on most family, private life and work routes costs the Home Office application fee plus the immigration health surcharge for the whole period of leave. Figures correct on 13 October 2026; fees usually change in April.

The application fee

£1,407 per person for most in-country extensions and switches, including partner, parent and private life applications. Some routes have their own fees.

The immigration health surcharge

£1,035 a year for adults and £776 a year for children and students, paid upfront for the full period of the new leave. A partner extension of two years and six months is charged as three years for an adult: £3,105.

A worked example

A partner extension for one adult, correct on 13 October 2026: £1,407 fee plus £3,105 surcharge, £4,512 before any priority service or legal fees. A family of two adults and one child pays each person's fee and surcharge.

Priority services

A priority decision costs £500 extra and a super priority decision £1,000 extra, where available for the route. Neither affects the outcome.

Fee waivers

If you cannot afford the fee you can apply for a fee waiver on family and private life applications where refusal would breach your human rights. You must show that you cannot pay the fee and meet essential living needs. The waiver application is decided first; if granted, the main application is then made without the fee and without the surcharge.

When to apply

Before your current leave expires. An application made in time extends your leave on the same conditions until it is decided.
