ILR processing times and timeline
Last updated 14 October 2026
On this page
The Home Office says you will usually get a decision on an indefinite leave to remain application within six months of providing your biometrics. Where the super priority service is available for your route, a decision is given by the end of the next working day for an extra £1,000. Figures correct on 13 October 2026.
The timeline
- Earliest application date: 28 days before you complete the qualifying period on most routes.
- Application and fee: £3,226 per person; see indefinite leave to remain for the routes.
- Biometrics: at a UKVCAS centre; the processing period runs from this date.
- Decision: usually within six months, often sooner where the case is straightforward.
- eVisa: your status is updated online; there is no longer a physical card for most people.
Do not travel
You must not leave the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man while the application is pending. If you do, the application is treated as withdrawn and the fee is lost.
What slows applications
Absence calculations that need checking, salary or sponsor queries on work routes, relationship evidence on partner routes, and any criminal or immigration history. A complete application with a clear travel history is the best protection against delay.
After the grant
Settlement has no expiry but is lost after two years' continuous absence. Twelve months after the grant you can apply for citizenship (immediately if married to a British citizen).
If it is overdue
See Home Office delays for the steps, from chasing to a pre-action letter.
