How long a pass is valid

A pass does not expire. Once you have passed you never need to take the test again, whether you use it for settlement now and citizenship years later, or whether your circumstances change in between. On passing you receive a unique reference number; keep it, because you enter it in the application form and the Home Office checks it against the test provider's record. Tests passed before 17 December 2019 came with a letter and a test reference ID instead; if you have lost it, explain this in a covering letter with the application.

Who is exempt

  • Under 18 at the date of application.
  • 65 or over.
  • A long-term physical or mental condition that prevents you from taking the test, confirmed by a doctor's letter or the exemption form.
  • You have already passed.

There is no exemption for having a UK degree or for English ability; those apply only to the separate English language requirement.

ID on the day

You must book and attend with the same ID. If you have an eVisa, book with a share code from your UKVI account; otherwise a valid passport, an EU, EEA or Swiss identity card, or a BRP or BRC (accepted up to 18 months after its expiry date). The name on the booking must match the ID exactly. Your photo is taken at the centre. Without the right ID you lose the test and the fee.

Special requirements

Disability adjustments can be requested when booking. If you have changed your name or gender and do not want this to appear, email the Home Office before booking. Children and other family members cannot come into the centre.

Help

Helpline 0800 015 4245, Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm. Refund requests and complaints go to the test provider within three months of the test date.

After the test

The pass is one requirement among several. See indefinite leave to remain and British citizenship for the residence, English, absence and good character requirements that apply with it.
